The compositions is this series are based on
photographs taken at Fiesta Del Pueblo 1998 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The moving
voice of the Fiesta is music and the mood is strictly “south of the border”. The air
smells of tacos, tamales and pasole. English and
Spanish weave together. Workers from
the fields, families who have “settled out” in town, young people, old
people, new arrivals and native North Carolinians of all races and roots join
together. In
only a few years the Fiesta Del Pueblo has grown from a small local event (2,000
– 3,000) to a statewide celebration (30,000) that includes soccer matches, a
health fair and a job fair.
The
borders on the Fiesta Del Pueblo Series
were created by scanning in photographs of the costumes of the performers
including the decorations on the Aztec dancers from Mexico City, the displays of
Mayan figures and designs at the festival, baseball hats, and flags from some of
the countries represented at the Fiesta.
